. The Trek to Upper Mustang - The Forbidden Kingdom


Mustang is one of Nepal's 75 districts. It situated in the part of Nepal. The term"Mustang" in the Tibetan language refers the"fertile soil". It has been opened after 1992 only for tourists. However, the area is still restricted and very limited number of overseas tourist trip there. Tibetan culture and traditions here mostly influences the people residing. People of this region practice customs and Tibetan culture and most of them speak Tibetan language.
Upper Mustang (the last realm of Nepal) is known as"The Forbidden Kingdom". Upper Mustang's last Bista king was Raja Jigme Dorje Palabar Bista. Of the allowances he was getting from the Nepal government has been cut off. As the constitution he is the king of Upper Mustang. However, the people of Upper Mustang respect him as their king. They give the respect to him.
Because of the remoteness of the area, the people of the area (Mustangi) are forced to practice all of the conventional instruments and techniques of life. They use donkeys and horses as a mode to transfer goods from 1 place to another.
Only limited quantity of tourists are allowed to travel to this region. This area has been restricted to maintain customs and its culture. With a view to conserve culture of this area Government's then His Majesty had enlisted this area as a limited location. Nepal Government charges 500 US$ per person as license fee, for 10 times trip to this area that is restricted. Few decades back, the permit fee to enter this region was higher than it currently is. The entry fee was decreased by Nepal government from 700 US$ to 500 US$ after knowing the significance of this area for tourism purpose. The Upper mustang region has been opened for the world for bike and trekking tours and jeep tours. However, the tourists can't travel independently within this restricted area. They must travel through the trekking service that is registered.
Mustang region was the trade route to Tibet in the days. Individuals used to exchange wool, medicinal herbs, animals, salt, etc..
Upper Mustang village area has a landscape that is very beautiful. It's among the most beautiful location ion world. We can observe rocks formations that are enormous. The historical myth about the Tiji begins with a deity named Dorje Jono. He battles his demon father to rescue mustang's kingdom. The water shortage is created by the demon in the kingdom affecting the lifestyles of the people in this barren and arid territory. Dorje dono brings and defeats his superhero dad prosper into the property. This uncommon and untouched heritage and civilization of the people of Mustang is a unforgettable and gorgeous sight to watch.
The trip to Upper Mustang for the Tiji festival will be of about 18 days. 18 days includes the day starting from Kathmandu and end in Kathmandu. The trip starts from Kathmandu. Then you'll either drive or fly to Pokhara from Kathmandu. If you go by flight on precisely the day you'll be heading to Jomsom by flight. But if you have a push to Pokhara then you are going to stay in Pokhara and then take a morning flight or push to Jomsom. The trail then drops steeply and undulates along the east bank of Kali Gandaki for 1.5 hours to the village of Chhuksang. By Chhuksang we can see the Chele and at Chhuksang there is a small cave Gumba. On our way people move under a huge block of sandstone.
We make 6 hours walk to reach. Immediately on leaving Chele, the route climbs up to a plateau area through a small tunnel like gully. On our approach to Syamochen we will have a panoramic view of Mt. Nilgiri, Tilicho peak and Yakawa Kang. The peak that dominates the Thorongla Pass on the Annapurna circuit. After walk we will hit the Samar village. The paths dives steeply for about 70 meters after departing Samar. It is a short climb out and into a different side canyon it dives after a brief respite. This scale is longer and steeper. After about two hours walk from Samar, the road reaches at an altitude of 3750 meters and descends slightly to the tea house. The second tea houses can be seen at the distance.
We walk along the Dhakmar and Tsarang village for the next two days to achieve Upper Mustang, Lomanthang. We remain in Lomanthang for 4 times. On the day in Lomanthang you'll be taking a break. You can make a short walk round the Lomanthang village if you are interested. On the other three days in Lomanthang you will watch the Tiji festival.
Is among the most remote regions of this trek, Yara after Lomanthang our next halt. There are two lodges and there is the scarcity of water. It is also the gateway to Damodar Kunda, one of the most visited area. Damodar has its own religious importance among the Hindu community people. Yara is your village situated at an altitude of 3,650 meters. It takes nearly 4-5 hours to achieve Yara out of Lomanthang
The Luri cave known as Luri Gonpa is located in the Yara Khola Valley. Luri Gumba lies at an elevation of 4,085 meters. The Luri cave is famous for the most early stupa. The Luri Cave contains a number of the earliest and most beautiful Buddhist mural paintings at the Mustang area. The mysterious Luri Cave Monastery in Upper Mustang is the 12th century cave monastery situated towards the east of Lomanthang.
Then we reunite via Tangye and Chuksang village to reach Jomsom, from where we will be boarding our flight to Pokhara. By simply taking a trip to 13, then , we could end our trip. These sums up our trip.
