It's
a trip that many tens of thousands decide to challenge themselves a true test
of willpower and fitness; a trip up Mount Everest. The experience is one that
won't soon be forgotten though!
The Everest base camp trek proved to be all
that I expected and so much more. As soon as we left Kathmandu's fascinating
town to head to Lukla, I understood this walk was likely to become one of the
toughest, yet rewarding of my entire life. One of the most appealing features
of this path for me - aside from the beauty of the whole area - has been the
opportunity.
People
heading are barking up the wrong tree. We would be staying in quaint small
teahouses, which have been basic, but amazingly comfortable. People that are
more experienced when it comes to trekking holidays will tell you that
immersing yourself in the local method of life is a huge element of experience
holidays. It is also a fantastic way to meet people if you end up traveling
with a group.
The first significant ascent of this tour saw us scale the Namche Hill, which
proved to be a walk, even though the guides seemed to get up there in no time.
Acclimatizing to the high altitude is something which has to be considered and
makes it even more important you've built up a certain level of fitness.
Spending a bit more time in the gym finally and avoiding chocolate bars pays
dividends, as the climbers from the group, are able to scale the Kalar Patar.
The views from the summit are incredible and make all of that hard work more
than worthwhile.
This
is the highlight of this trip along with the subsequent four days were spent
retracing our steps back to Lukla, which is, unsurprisingly, much easier
going downhill. When we got back to Kathmandu I was sad that my Nepalese
experience had come to a conclusion, but flicking through the awesome snaps on
my camera brought it all back, I knew this could be an experience I would never
forget; the folks I had met and the places I had seen actually did make this a holiday of a lifetime.
