Bhaktapur Durbar Square | Unesco World Heritage Sites In Nepal

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is located in the middle of Bhaktapur city. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is bigger in area than Kathmandu Durbar Square and much less crowded than Patan Durbar Square. The catastrophic earthquake of 1934 is thought to have destroyed buildings and many temples of the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. It is one of the popular Unesco World Heritage Sites Nepal. A ticket booth is at the western end of the Durbar Square where SAARC nationals and foreigners need to pay an entry fee to Bhaktapur.

Heritages

Bhaktapur Durbar Square has one of the best collections of the medieval arts of Nepal. There are many lovely temples, palaces, and buildings in the Bhaktapur Durbar Square which are examples of architecture that is excellent. These include The Lion Gate, The Golden Gate, the 55 window palace, the statue of Bhupatindra Malla, Nyatopola temple, Vatsala Temple, Dattatraya temple, The Art Gallery, Pujari Math, Bhairav Nath temple, The Shiva Parvati Temple and the Pashupatinath Temple. Dattatreya Temple, built by King Yaksha Malla, is the temple architecture in Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

Temples

The Lion Gate was built by King Bhupatindra Malla in the 17th century. The Lion Gate is guarded on each side by statues of lions and by 2 stone statues of Lord Bhairab and Goddess Ugrachandi. It is said that cut off so he could not duplicate those masterpieces. The Golden Temple, which was constructed by King Ranjit Malla, has an image of Goddess Kali and Garuda (the mythical guy bird) at the top. It is embellished with nymphs and various mythical creatures with intricacy. The Golden Gate is also this 55 window palace along with the Taleju Temple's entry.

The Pashupatinath Temple in Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Legend has it that a Bhaktapur king had a dream in which Lord Shiva asked him to build a temple to him. The king constructed the Pashupatinath Temple and obeyed the command of Lord Shiva. Nyatopola temple at Bhaktapur is 30 meters high and is 5 storied. Nyatopola Temple, dedicated to Goddess Siddhilaxmi, is one of the best examples of Nepali architecture. Back in Newari, Nyatopole refers to the 5 elements - earth, wind, fire, water and sky.

The Palace of 55 Windows was built by King Yaksha Malla at 1427 AD. The 55 Window Palace has a balcony of 55 windows and is considered a masterpiece of woodcarving. The palace was remodeled by King Bhupatindra Malla in the 17th century.

King Yaksha Malla built Bhaktapur Royal Palace and was added to by many kings. The end of this palace has been converted into an Art Gallery. The Art Gallery is open every day except on Tuesdays. Vatsala Temple in Bhaktapur which was assembled by King Jagat Prakash Malla, is a beautiful Shikhara style temple. Has a strong resemblance to the Krishna Mandir at Patan.
